It has been awhile since I have written my last blog, and I now plan on writing more frequently. Most of my subject matter will be about what is happening in Eddyville with the city government, E-B Schools, businesses, local organizations and individuals in the community. My focus will either be a behind the scene look at what is happening or at least a different perspective than what is reported in the local newspapers. There will be other times that I may write something completely different and non-related to the community.
Since the city election will be held on November 3, many of my blogs in the next few weeks will be about the city government. I will review what has taken place in the last four years and why I feel there needs to be a change. There are three council seats up for election this year, but, unfortunately, only three candidates filed the necessary papers, by the deadline date, to have their names appear on the ballot. I say “unfortunately” because the citizens of Eddyville will not have a choice in electing city council candidates unless there is a successful drive to elect one or more write-in candidates. Otherwise, if there is no other choice, the new council will be all men and will consist of three individuals who work for the same company in town. Four of the five council members will be around 60 years of age or older with two of them being retired. In my opinion, there will be no diversity on the council and it will be a continuation of the ‘ole boy network and the status quo.
But, fortunately, the voters in Eddyville will have a choice when it comes to electing a Mayor. Randy Deevers will be challenging the incumbent John E. Johnston for the position. Randy is not part of the ‘ole boy system that has been in charge of city hall for the past four years. He will serve as a check and balance to the actions of the city council, and he will also provide supervision of city employees and close oversight of city expenditures.
To be continued, next Tuesday.
