Future Blogs

It has been awhile since I have written my last blog, and I now plan on writing more frequently.  Most of my subject matter will be about what is happening in Eddyville with the city government, E-B Schools, businesses, local organizations and individuals in the community.  My focus will either be a behind the scene look at what is happening or at least a different perspective than what is reported in the local newspapers.  There will be other times that I may write something completely different and non-related to the community.

Since the city election will be held on November 3, many of my blogs in the next few weeks will be about the city government.  I will review what has taken place in the last four years and why I feel there needs to be a change.  There are three council seats up for election this year, but, unfortunately, only three candidates filed the necessary papers, by the deadline date, to have their names appear on the ballot.  I say “unfortunately” because the citizens of Eddyville will not have a choice in electing city council candidates unless there is a successful drive to elect one or more write-in candidates. Otherwise, if there is no other choice, the new council will be all men and will consist of three individuals who work for the same company in town. Four of the five council members will be around 60 years of age or older with two of them being retired.  In my opinion, there will be no diversity on the council and it will be a continuation of the ‘ole boy network and the status quo.

But, fortunately, the voters in Eddyville will have a choice when it comes to electing a Mayor.  Randy Deevers will be challenging the incumbent John E. Johnston for the position.  Randy is not part of the ‘ole boy system that has been in charge of city hall for the past four years.  He will serve as a check and balance to the actions of the city council, and he will also provide supervision of city employees and close oversight of city expenditures.

To be continued, next Tuesday.

Silent Sam, I appreciate your feedback, and I don’t totally disagree with you. People do have to be willing to “step up to the plate and take a swing.” There are various reasons why they do not, but some do not want to go against the ‘ole boy’ network that has run this town for many years. Is this a good excuse? No, it is not! But, Eddyville being a small community, where everybody knows everybody, they do not want to make waves. On the other hand, there may be some individuals who need encouraging by others to run for office. Knowing there are others who want you to run and will give their support is certainly an incentive. I believe that a couple of the council candidates who are running were asked to run by one or more of our present city officials who knew that Larry Harding and Dick Shepherd were not running for re-election.

As I mentioned in my blog, the present city council candidates will automatically be elected unless there are one or more write-in candidates. Come January 1st, there will three council members who work for Tri-County Construction Co., with Dwight Lobberecht being the owner/manager of the company. Now, there is much more that could be said about this (conflict of interest, etc.), but suffice it to say that I don’t believe the other two Tri-County employees on the council will be disagreeing or voting against their boss on important issues.

There will be no real diversity of opinion on the city council if the present slate of candidates is elected. Three of the council members will be working for the same company and four of the five-member-council will be around sixty or older which will include two members who are already retired. And the Mayor is 74. Ideally, there would be representatives from other occupations or companies, some younger individuals and some females. We need some new ideas and ways of thinking. If we continue to do things the same old way, we will continue to get the same old results.

It seems that you are putting blame on the mayor and council for the lack of choice in the upcoming election.  How can it be their fault?

If people truly want a change, they will step up to the plate and take a swing.  Regardless of who they might be working with.  It's ridiculous to insinuate that our current council is to blame for the lack of candidates.  You cry for change but you're not on the ballot.

And why do you make such a big deal about who they work for?  They all have a stake in this town.  They live here.  They have families here.  How this town is run is important to them.  Important enough that they took the time to find out what the procedure is to get their name on the ballot.  Important enough that they are willing to sit on the council and take abuse from bitter irate citizens for several years.  Important enough to spend hours of their time to deal with city issues.  Oh sure they get paid a few bucks, as I understand it, most of them donate their city pay back into the community.  Little league, Museum, girl scouts,.

You want change so bad, step up and set an example for the others who want change.
